Nappy Roots

Country and proud of it, Nappy Roots formed in 1995 around a sextet of students attending Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Four members of the group were Kentucky natives (Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, and Big V), bolstered by an Oakland transplant (R. Prophet) and a Milledgeville, Georgia native (Fish Scales). Nappy Roots began making music together at a local record shop-cum-studio named ET's Music, and released their full-length debut, Country Fried Cess, in 1998. Drawn to the group's distinctive twist on Southern bounce, the major labels began flocking, and they eventually signed to Atlantic. Their label debut, Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz, was released in 2002 and sold over 3 million units, making them the best selling rap group of year. In total the group has released 5 full length albums and 10 mixtapes and continues to tour extensively across the country.  The new album is set to be released in late 2014 through Universal/Fontana.

- Grammy nominated Hip-Hop group
- Over 4 MILLION records sold. (#1 Hip Hop album sales - 2006)
- “Po Folks” Top 10 Hit on Billboard Rap charts and American Music Award Nomination
- Touring nationwide over 100 dates per year

Mani Draper

What does it mean to be prophetic in a time where you can find anything on the internet, know it claim it, and be it. What does patience look like now-a-days? How do you do it? Not holding back, but revealing? Not hiding the truth, but letting truth roam, illuminating wherever it may go? Mani is such a person, a rapper, and an artist that does this with his lyrics. There is no form or definitive space in music, where he cannot find a way to let his truth be heard—to act as a beacon. He is son of Richmond, CA. A son ofthe Brave Area: a sometimes afterthought as well an inspiration for movements identified as “progressive”. Mani does not claim to be conscious, or non-hyphy, or serious. In his music, he does not claim to do anything but present his truth, in any format he is allowed to. The thing about prophecy is that it’s like a refugee looking for a home. Looking to be supported—to have shape. When that happens, manifestation occurs and the prophet will assume his rightful place. He will align with destiny. Mani Draper’s music is a prophetic type that seeks to create a distinctsound as a stage to present his message, and asks the listeners to come along on this journey, so they may find a way into their own.
